Today the United States Federal Drug Administration dispatched alerts to several manufacturers of e-cigarettes for advertising them unlawfully as aids to help quit-smoking and said it plans to classify the e-cigarettes as drugs.
This is the most recent move made by the Federal Drug Administration to control the battery-powered products that permits users to breathe in a vaporized nicotine as an alternative to cigarette nicotine.
The FDA informed a news group the warnings had been for their violations of the law, which includes producing unsubstantiated statements and bad production procedures.
The law states, an organization can't state that its item can treat an illness, such as nicotine dependency, unless of course the drug's safety and effectiveness have been proven.
However all 5 organizations state that their particular products help people stop smoking.
He said "We are curious about finding out whether e-cigarettes can be proven safe and effective.".
The organizations that received the letters included the following 5 companies; E-CigaretteDirect LLC; Ruyan America Inc; Gamucci America, E-Cig Technology Inc and Johnson's Creek Enterprises LLC.
This letter only involves the 5 companies that received it. However the FDA will look into each e-Ciggerette company and asses the companies individually.
In addition to the stop smoking claims, a few of the businesses had been targeted simply because they market medications in liquid form to be used in cartridges that become vaporized and can be breathed in by users.
The letters that the companies received stated they will have fifteen days to reply. The Federal Drug Administration will wait to act based on what the businesses say, Levy said.
