According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Seahawks will look to trade or release T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

It's an uncapped year, let's be a New York team that takes advantage.  instead of trying to force-fit David Clowney into a possession-receiver role despite having Jerricho Cotchery on the team, or trying to utilize his speed as a deep threat despite having Braylon Edwards on the team.   Let's get a true possession-receiver for young Mark Sanchez.

Clowney has played pretty well this preseason, but he still is not a better option then either of the aforementioned wide receivers.  He simply doesn't bring a different dimension to the passing game, and will be relegated to anonymity upon the return of Santonio Holmes in week 5.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, however, does bring a different dimension to the passing game, and remains a useful option even upon the return of Santonio Holmes.  at 6'2" and 200 lbs., he'll bring size to the slot.  He isn't a game-breaker, but he is a top-flight route runner that will excel at getting open under the coverage.  Similarly to Jerricho Cotchery, Houshmandzadeh has great hands and a nose for the first down marker, making him a great safety blanket for Sanchez.

The Jets tried to fill this role with Laveranues Coles who was cut last week with the rumor that he will be added to the roster after week 1 so that his contract isn't guaranteed.  However, in limited action, Coles looked slowed by age, and you had to wonder if he could get open against real competition.

It is interesting that Rex Ryan would say that he expected Coles to be a leader on this team, but then the team releases him over a relatively minuscule amount of money.  it is more likely his skills have eroded to the point where leader or not, he isn't a viable option.

The cut of Houshmandzadeh has more to do with money than erosion of skill.  while Housh's numbers were down last season, it was more a function of erratic quarterback play in Seattle than erosion of skill.  You need look no further than the last time a team tried to fill Housmandzadeh's shoes with Coles, the 2009 Cincinnati Bengals, to see the difference in the two wide outs.

Houshmandzadeh would provide stability to the Jets' receiving corps for the first four games of 2010, and then an amazing amount of depth when Holmes comes off suspension.  at that point, the Jets four star receivers would create match-up problems all over the field.
